Dil Raju is reportedly eyeing another ₹100-crore-plus theatrical deal, this time for the Telugu states rights of Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, which stars Ranbir Kapoor as Ram and Yash as Ravana. According to reports, negotiations are underway for around ₹105 crore on a returnable advance basis. The development comes immediately after Dil Raju’s high-profile acquisition of Yash’s Toxic for the Telugu market, making his next move particularly interesting for the trade.
Toxic’s Result Won’t Cause Major Damage, But It Matters
Although Toxic is heading towards a disappointing theatrical outcome, Dil Raju’s exposure is reportedly protected because the deal was structured on a returnable basis. Reports indicate that the initial commitment of around ₹108 crore was subsequently revised, with buyers ultimately putting up roughly ₹75 crore. The arrangement reportedly includes provisions for the deficit to be returned. This means Dil Raju is unlikely to suffer the kind of massive direct loss that a conventional ₹100-crore-plus outright purchase could have caused.
Nevertheless, the film’s failure is significant from a judgement and strategy standpoint. After the disappointment of Game Changer, another major pan-India bet failing to connect with Telugu audiences raises questions. How aggressively should Dil Raju continue pursuing expensive non-Telugu titles?
Will Dil Raju Still Bet ₹105 Crore on Ramayana?
Ramayana is a completely different proposition. The ₹4,000-crore-plus two-part epic, directed by Nitesh Tiwari and featuring Ranbir Kapoor, Yash and Sai Pallavi, is already generating enormous pre-release business. Sony reportedly secured a major international distribution deal. Its Telugu-market potential is also considerably stronger on paper, given Yash’s enormous following in the region and the cultural familiarity of the Ramayana story.
But after Toxic, all eyes will be on whether Dil Raju is willing to commit another ₹105 crore, even with a returnable structure. If he goes ahead, it will show that the veteran producer-distributor remains firmly bullish on big pan-Indian films—and believes Ramayana is powerful enough to overcome the lessons of Toxic.
